The White House removed CNN from its scheduled television pool assignment for Monday, September 21, 2026, expanding an ongoing dispute between President Donald Trump’s administration and several major news organizations.
CNN had been scheduled to serve as the primary television pool network during Trump’s trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly. However, the White House’s Sunday night press schedule did not identify CNN, or any other network, as the primary television pool for Monday.
White House Removes CNN From Monday Pool Rotation
CNN normally participates in a long-standing rotation involving ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC and Fox News. The designated television pool network provides video, audio and reporting that can be shared with other news organizations when access to the president is restricted by space or security requirements.
According to CNN’s report, Hearst was listed as the secondary television crew in Washington, while Real America’s Voice was assigned as the secondary crew for Trump’s New York trip. Secondary crews normally participate in coverage but do not perform all responsibilities assigned to the primary television pool.
The change matters beyond CNN because local television stations, digital news organizations and international outlets often rely on pool footage for coverage of presidential events.
Trump Expands Restrictions on CNN, MS NOW and Politico
The pool decision follows Trump’s September 18 announcement that CNN, MS NOW and Politico would be banned from the White House. Trump accused the organizations of producing what he described as “fake news.”
The restrictions were enforced on September 19 when journalists representing all three organizations were denied access to the White House grounds, according to Reuters.
CNN reporter Betsy Klein said her credential had been deactivated. Journalists representing MS NOW and Politico also reported being prevented from entering.
CNN Challenges White House Restrictions
CNN has argued that the restrictions interfere with its constitutionally protected newsgathering and has said its reporting on the federal government will continue.
CNN, MS NOW and Politico are also preparing to challenge the access restrictions on First Amendment grounds, according to reporting on the dispute.
The First Amendment protects freedom of the press, although the specific legal questions surrounding White House access can involve credentialing rules, government security requirements and whether journalists are being treated differently because of their reporting or viewpoints.
Press Pool Dispute Creates Wider Coverage Questions
CNN’s removal from Monday’s pool assignment creates uncertainty over how the traditional network rotation will operate if the restrictions continue.
