California Attorney General Rob Bonta is emerging as one of the most closely watched state law-enforcement officials in the United States, leading major cases involving Big Tech, Hollywood mergers and federal government policy.
Bonta has served as California’s attorney general since April 2021. He became the first person of Filipino descent to hold the office and was elected to a full term in 2022. Before becoming attorney general, he spent more than eight years in the California State Assembly and previously worked as a deputy city attorney in San Francisco. He earned both his undergraduate degree and law degree from Yale University.
Lead the Multistate Meta Settlement
One of Bonta’s highest-profile cases involves Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram.
On August 26, 2026, Bonta announced a proposed settlement of up to $17 billion between Meta and a bipartisan coalition of 51 attorneys general. The lawsuit alleged that Meta designed features that encouraged excessive social media use among children and teenagers while misleading families about potential risks.
The settlement remains subject to court approval. Under the proposed agreement, Meta would introduce measures including default daily time limits for younger users, restrictions on overnight use, stronger parental controls and additional age-verification protections. Meta’s agreement resolves the states’ claims without establishing the allegations as proven at trial.
Challenge the Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery Merger
Bonta is also leading a coalition of 12 attorneys general seeking to block Paramount Skydance Corporation’s proposed $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.
California filed the lawsuit on July 13, arguing that the merger could reduce competition across movie distribution and cable programming. According to the California Department of Justice, the combined company could control nearly one-third of theatrical movies and basic cable programming in the United States.
A federal court temporarily halted the merger, and the companies later agreed not to complete the transaction before June 1, 2027, or until the court rules on the states’ claims.
Expand California’s Legal Challenges to the Trump Administration
Bonta has also become a central figure in California’s legal disputes with President Donald Trump’s administration.
As of August 4, 2026, California DOJ reported that Bonta had filed 82 lawsuits against the administration in approximately 18 months, leading or co-leading 55 of them. The department estimates that those legal actions have protected approximately $207 billion in California funding and resources.
The combination of technology regulation, antitrust enforcement and federal litigation has placed Rob Bonta at the center of legal disputes whose outcomes could affect consumers and businesses well beyond California.
